Are you ready to deal with more requests for time off?

We reported in May about the introduction of the Additional Paternity Leave (APL) regulations in April of next year. These regulations were passed by the former government in April but in July the coalition suggested they may be amended or even repealed. The new government has now stepped back from that position and confirmed that the regulations will be implemented as originally planned, for babies born on or after 3 April 2011. The government has made it clear that it sees these new regulations as an “interim measure” pending the introduction of a system of flexible parental leave.

Employers need to make sure that they have appropriate policies and procedures in place to deal with APL, now that the implementation of the new right has been confirmed. They must also be prepared to deal with the possibility more applications for flexible working as this right has been extended to parents of children up to the age of 18 with effect from the same date i.e. April 2011.
